BAIC Off-Road Releases Powertrain Details of the Beijing 81

2026 03/13

BAIC Off-Road has unveiled the powertrain specifications for its all-new Beijing 81, which will be equipped with a 1.5T four-cylinder range extender. Derived from the BJ80 and co-created with users, the mass-produced model will be available in two variants: the Standard Edition and the Professional Edition.

According to the official statement, the 1.5T four-cylinder range extender physically eliminates the inherent vibration issues that plague three-cylinder units. This delivers improvements not only in ride comfort, but more critically, in the overall mechanical durability of the vehicle. In a battery-depleted state, the 1.5T range extender maximizes the energy conversion efficiency of every drop of fuel. Even when operating in pure range-extended mode, its fuel consumption remains at an excellent level among fuel-powered vehicles in the same class. The decision to forgo a 2.0T range extender was made because the 1.5T unit strikes the optimal calculated balance between power reserve, fuel efficiency, mechanical reliability, and long-term operating costs.

The Beijing 81 adopts a rugged, boxy off-road exterior design, fitted with professional off-road upgrades including a hood scoop, red brake calipers, external storage boxes, tow hooks, and large-diameter wheels. To date, only the exterior design of the new model has been revealed, with its interior design yet to be unveiled.
