BMW's entry-level electric vehicle (EV) plans may be postponed until 2030, with the i2 being a sedan and the i1 adopting a hatchback design.

In BMW's initial plan, the i1 was seen as the all-electric version of the BMW 1 Series, positioned as a compact sedan, and was scheduled for release in 2027; while the BMW i2 was to be considered the successor to the old i3 (discontinued in 2022), positioned as a compact SUV, with a planned launch in 2028. With the i2 now changing to a sedan, it is expected that BMW will also introduce models like the iX1 and iX2 to complete its product lineup.

The two new models will be produced on the Neue Klasse platform and will use BMW's sixth-generation battery technology, offering both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. Notably, the first model based on the Neue Klasse platform, the BMW iX3, will be unveiled at the Munich Auto Show this September. It will also be produced domestically in a stretched version, named the iX3 L, with a planned release in 2026.
